Day 14: Thursday, Week 3—The Boneyard

Exodus 19:1-9a; Psalm 19; 1 Peter 2:4-10

Junk yard, salvage yard, bone yard—they are various names for places where you can find parts for your car when you need them. Some of these lots are well organized, and some of them aren’t. These are not the new parts, nicely boxed and clean of grime. These are parts from vehicles that have outrun their usefulness to others or disabled by accidents. Yet, if you know exactly what you want and are willing and able to do the work yourself, they are places that can save a fair amount of money. Doors, seats, hubcaps and wheels, water and oil pumps, radiators and even transmissions can be found in good serviceable condition at the bone yard. They are rejected by many and stored by others with the hope that they might be important to someone someday. For people who are restoring vehicles, these bone yards can be a treasure trove.

Today we are reminded that there are days when we will feel rejected, even cast aside and deemed useless by the world, yet God has a use for us. God is constantly reaching into our bone yard, restoring and building vibrant communities of faith. Even Christ was rejected by the world, but his life and ministry, death and resurrection, are the very foundation of our faith. We are reminded that as Christ lives, so our lives are valued, living testimonies to the great treasure God has created from the cast offs in the bone yard. Indeed, the church is not a building, it is the living community of faith which you are part of. Without your participation in the great resurrection conversation, the church is less than God intends. Even in those times when we feel rejected and cast aside, we are part of God’s treasure trove.

Prayer
Lord, there are days when we do not know your presence in our lives and forget that you continue to live among us. In those times, we also forget that we are part of your living body for others. May we always know your presence bearing witness to your continued merciful creating hands. Amen
